US Vice President in France to Ease Tensions with Longstanding Ally

U.S – (WARSOOR) – U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Douglas Emhoff arrive at Paris-Orly Airport in Orly, France, Tuesday, November 9.

Harris arrived Tuesday in Paris for a four-day visit to France, where she is due to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron.

It’s the first visit to France by a senior U.S. official since a diplomatic crisis last month between Washington and its oldest ally.

The leaders are expected to discuss “the importance of the transatlantic relationship to global peace and security and underscore the importance of our partnership on global challenges from COVID-19 and the climate crisis to issues affecting the Sahel and the Indo-Pacific,” according to the U.S. embassy in France.

Harris also is expected to join Macron for the November 11 commemorations marking the end of World War One.

The relationship between the two countries came under strain over the U.S.-Australia security alliance, known as AUKUS, which also includes the United Kingdom. It included a submarine sale agreement with Australia that effectively canceled a 2016 Australian-French submarine deal.

The U.S. decision to secretly negotiate drew outrage from Paris.

Last month, U.S. President Joe Biden said his government’s handling of a security agreement with Australia and Britain had been “clumsy” and sought to turn the page during his first meeting with Macron since the diplomatic row.
